How to choose the right nationality for your home

Language, household size and the kind of care you need matter more than anything else. Here is how to weigh them.

Most families start with a nationality in mind, often based on a friend’s experience. A better starting point is your own home: who lives there, which language you speak every day and which tasks matter most.

Start with language

If grandparents or young children will spend most of the day with the housekeeper, daily communication is the first filter. Eritrean and many Indonesian and Ethiopian housekeepers speak Arabic, while Filipino, Kenyan, Ugandan and Nigerian housekeepers communicate in English.

Match strengths to duties

Large homes and villas benefit from energetic, experienced housekeepers. Homes with newborns need patience and gentle care. Families who cook at home often prefer candidates with real kitchen experience.

The best match is the housekeeper who fits your routine, not the most requested nationality.
